Presentation “The Long Island Motor Parkway, the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race and Central Park”


The Central Park Historical Society and the Bethpage Public Library will be co-sponsoring a presentation The Long Island Motor Parkway, the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race and Central Park" to be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 beginning at 7:30 PM. They have issued the following press release:


In celebration of Central Park's role in the first road built exclusively for the automobile and the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race, historian Howard Kroplick will present a review of the historic Long Island Motor Parkway and the incredible Vanderbilt Cup Races. Howard, a resident of East Hills, is a leading researcher and lecturer on the Motor Parkway and the Vanderbilt Cup Races amassing more than 20,000 images and articles and accumulating a large collection of memorabilia. He is also the owner of the restored 1909 Alco "Black Beast" racer that won both the 1909 and 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Races. Come join the Central Park Historical Society for what promises to be an exciting evening for fans of Long Island automotive history. Following the presentation, Howard will be signing his two books "The Long Island Motor Parkway" and "The Vanderbilt Cup Races of Long Island" with all proceeds donated to Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS).

The ground-breaking ceremony for the Long Island Motor Parkway held on June 6, 2011 at Jerusalem Road (now Stewart Avenue in Bethpage)



 

The Motor Parkway Bridge over Central Avenue and the Long Island Rail Road
