Mystery Foto #39 Solved: The 1903 Oldsmobile Curved Dash Runabout Owned by Sam Greco

As a follow-up to Sunday's post on the 1897 Grant, last weekend's Mystery Foto featured an automobile which is one of the oldest vehicles currently owned by a Long Islander.

Mystery Foto questions:

  • Identify the year, manufacturer and model of the automobile

1903 Oldsmobile Curved Dash Runabout.

  • Who is the current owner?

Master mechanic Sam Greco of Garden City Park. The photo was taken at the 2017 Old Westbury Gardens AACA Meet.

  • Bonus: Identify an automobile currently on Long Island that is older than the one in the Mystery Foto. Please forward any jpegs to [email protected] .

Below is the current running list. The oldest known automobile owned by a Long Islander is Sam Greco's 1901 Oldsmobile Curved Dash Runabout.

Mystery Foto # 39… The auto is a 1905 Curved Dash Oldsmobile. The current owner would be Suffolk County Historical Society, Riverhead. The name John Van Mater Howell of Southold is associated with this car. The original owner, Maybe.  As I recall someone was producing scaled down, functional replicas back in the 50s or 60s. I remember one at the Worlds Fair where I worked in 1964, 1965.

I BELIEVE THAT IS SAM GRECO DRIVING THE 1903 CURVED DASH OLDSMOBILE. HE USUALLY HAS IT AT WESTBURY GARDENS SHOW AND AT THE EASTER DAY PARADE.
SEVERAL YEARS I JUDGED A 1899 LOCOMOBILE HERE ON LONG ISLAND. IT WAS STEAM POWERED

A VEHICLE THAT IS OLDER THAN THE SAM GRECO 1903 OLDSMOBILE, IS A 1901 ROCHESTER STEAMER, IT WAS IN PARKER WICKAMS’S MUSEUM COLLECTION IN MATTITUCK L.I.  I SAW IT THERE UNTIL 2011 WHEN PARKER PASSED.  I DO NOT KNOW IF SOMEONE ON LONG ISLAND NOW HAS IT OR IT WENT SOMEPLACE ELSE. MANY OF HIS VEHICLES WENT TO A MUSEUM IN ALASKA. I WAS TOLD THIS RECENTLY BY A FELLOW HERE ON L.I. THAT NOW HAS PARKERS’ 1952 MUNTZ JET.

Sam Greco’s 1903 Oldsmobile

Toyn Guarnaschelli’s ALCO truck might be older?

This mystery photo to me is too easy to me,because I knew right off the bat that’s Sam Greco driving that car and I know he has a car like that,he brought it to the Easter Parade in Garden City,so all I had to do is find about it. This is what I came up with. The car is a 1905 Curved Dash Oldsmobile. As to another car older than that,I might get back to you on that.

Many of Parker Wickham’s automobiles wound up at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum in Fairbanks, Alaska - one of the best auto museums in the U.S.  And yes, his 1901 Rochester Steam Runabout is there.  Also located there is the 1899 Hertel that Henry Austin Clark once owned (among other ex-HAC vehicles on exhibit).

GARY, THANKS FOR THE FOLLOW UP INFORMATION. ON THE 1901 ROCHESTER. IT SEEMS IT IS NO LONGER ON L.I. BUT AT LEAST IT IS IN THE U.S.A. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE THE 1899 LOCOMOBILE THAT WAS ON L.I. IS NOW. ALSO DOES SAM GRECO HAVE MORE THAN ONE CURVED DASH OLDSMOBILE.
