Inside the Restoration of the Mustang III Concept Show Car (2011-2013)
Fourty-eight years after it was built in 1963, the Mustang III Concept Show Car was restored by Michael Capozzi of Capaldi Enterprises of Willoughby, Ohio from 2011 to 2013. Every step of the restoration was documented by Capaldi including experimental and prototype parts and special labeling.

VIN Number #5S08F100009
Fifteen Mustang pilot units with S-code VINs were built at the Allen Park Pilot Plant in 1963 prior to the first assembly of production Mustangs which began in early 1964.
The Mustang III was the ninth pre-production Mustang ever built. The first eight S-code Mustangs have been destroyed or their existence are unknown. It is the only known existing Mustang with an S-code VIN and according to Mustang historian Bob Fria, it is likely “the oldest known Mustang on the road today.”
1964 1/2 Special Falcon Labeling
A Ford label was discovered under one of the front bucket seats.
The "Seat Load Deflection Data" label indicated it was for a 1964 1/2 Special Falcon. The spring was dated September 4, 1963 with a trim date of October 7, 1963.
The handwritten copy on the top left of the label reads "Manuf. Proto."
This defroster nozzle was made for a "Special Falcon."
Prototype Safety Glass
The safety glass from CarLite was marked "Prototype Solid Safety Glass."
1963 Part
This part was labeled with a May 11, 1963 date.
Experimental Ford (XF) Label
This part was labeled XF signifying an "experimental Ford" part.
Experimental Engineering Stamp
These parts were stamped with XE numbers signifying "experimental engineering" parts.
