Hemmings Senior Editor Jim Donnelly receives EMPA lifetime achievement award
Senior Editor Jim Donnelly (right) was co-recipient of the annual Jim Hunter Memorial Award, a lifetime achievement honor for print journalists, at this past weekend’s 43rd annual Eastern Motorsport Press Association conference and convention in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. The award is named for the late Jim Hunter, an esteemed South Carolina sportswriter and editor who rose to the presidency of Darlington Raceway and later became a NASCAR vice president.
The Hunter award was presented on the basis of a vote by EMPA’s 150-plus professional members, which for the first time in the organization’s history, ended in a tie. The co-winner was Mike Mallett of Area Auto Racing News, left, with NASCAR’s Tim Southers in the middle. Donnelly was also the recipient of an award for feature writing, for his story on a 1909 Alco race car that was published in Hemmings Classic Car issue #100. He holds close to 50 awards for excellence in journalism.
