From the NYC Municipal Archives: Images from the Motor Parkway and the 1937 Vanderbilt Cup Race

Last month the New York City Municipal Archives released a database of over 870,000 photos from their collection of 2.2 million images of New York throughout the 20th century. I found seven photos related to the Long Island Motor Parkway and the Vanderbilt Cup Races.

Long Island Motor Parkway

The Long Island Motor Parkway, Inc. placed directional signs along Nassau Boulevard (later renamed Horace Harding Parkway) to help motorists find the entrance to the Motor Parkway. The top sign was placed at the corner of Nassau Boulevard and Rodman Street (later renamed College Point Boulevard). The same sign was placed at the intersection of Northern Boulevard and Kissena Boulevard (left). This aerial was taken over Alley Park in Queens before 1932. Two of the Motor Parkway bridges can be readily seen; Wheeler Farmway Bridge #2 and the Winchester Boulevard Motor Parkway Bridge. This photo of Queens farmland was taken from the Motor Parkway bridge over Black Stump Road (73rd Avenue) looking west on November 28, 1941.

1937 Vanderbilt Cup Race

Three photos from the 1937 Vanderbilt Cup Race held at Roosevelt Raceway in Westbury, New York were found in the NYC archives. The Atlantic featured these 53 amazing photos from the collection. Link to NYC Municipal Archives Gallery Honored with Two Webby Awards
