First Brigade of Irish Volunteers Guard the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race Course
The Irish Volunteers, a forerunner of the National Guard, happened to be encamped on the Hicksville Plains when the 1908 race was being run. In the above photo, the uniformed volunteers were seen marching through Hicksville with their trusty muskets.
How the Vanderbilt Cup Race Commission attempted to secure the course will be discussed at tomorrow's presentation to the Long Island Shields, a fraternal organization of Long Island police officers.
